Coccidia
This is the season when Coccidia affects kids. Sometimes there are signs of infection (diarrhea, sick-looking kids) sometime there are no symptom before death occurs. I cannot stress enough how important is is to treat PREVENTATIVELY starting at 3 weeks of age. Keep kids dry, clean and out of the mud. Do NOT crowd your kids.
I am NOT a vet. Do your research, talk to your vet but I have listed commonly used dosages below.
For Sulmet liquid: orally
Day one: 1 ml per 5 pounds
Days 2-5: 1 ml per 10 pounds
Give directly by syringe orally. Count 20 days from the time of the first dose and repeat.
For Di-methox 40%: orally
1ml per 5 pounds day 1
1ml per 10 pounds days 2-5
Give directly by syringe orally. Count 20 days from the time of the first dose and repeat.
For Dimethox 12.5 % : orally
3.1 ml per 5 pounds day 1
3.1 ml per 10 pounds days 2-5
Give directly by syringe orally. Count 20 days from the time of the first dose and repeat.
Some good references: Please read these prior to treating your kids.

Thanks. I just did this with my 2 kids this week with Dimethox 12.5%. Just to be on the safe side. I've never had coccidiosis in my herd, but this year has been really streefull on them. With kidding so early here and all the rain and mud. I had the vet out and he took a fecal sample of the mother of these 2 kids and said that SHE had cocidiosis. I treated her 3 days with Albon. But my friend ,who disbuds for me and has had goats all her life and works at a vet clinic, said these 2 kids do not look at all like kids with cocidiosis. But I did the prevention, just to make sure.
ReplyDeleteI really believe in treating preventatively. It is MUCH harder to treat than to prevent.
